View Full Version : Spare Time?
Lefty's dad 06-24-2008, 11:39 AM Just curious, what do you all do in your spare time? Do you have any spare time?
Our family spends most of the time up until 7/1 on the baseball field. July and August, hmmmmmm, maybe I can finally get that hammock up! :p
During the school year...... wait a second, there's not much time for hobbies then either! This parenting thing is quite time consuming.
I do find time occasionally to stare at my 55gallon planted tropical freshwater aquarium. I suspect the fish stare back when I'm not looking but I try not to let it bother me. :D

lesliekremer 07-09-2008, 12:49 PM We spend a lot of time swimming here in the summer time. I constantly have the baby pool up and also have a 3 footer that the kids splash around in. That gives me time to spend to chat with friends or possibly read a book! If we're not hanging by the pool, we're park hopping around time. The occasional rainy day we bake cookies (yumm).
I live in a great community and have good relationships with some other Christian moms that are at home with their kids. I truly am blessed! WE LOVE THE SUMMER!
Kids and swimming pools. What could go together better?
I might not do so good though if everytime it rained I made cookies. I'd end up in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade with strings on my feet.
That's a real blessing the you live in that kind of community and have those kind of relationships so close. I think that almost everyone would agree the best way to grow as a Christian is to spend time with your Christian brothers and sisters.
Quick commercial ----- Feel free to tell them about this site as well. They'd certainly be welcome! ---- end commercial.
Now, I wonder if we have any cookies around here anywhere...............
Tom
lesliekremer 07-10-2008, 07:14 PM Actually I was thinking I would mention this to them. As I really have a good feeling about what you're doing here!
I did the technical part to get it started. Where it goes from here is in God's hands. I can't wait to watch and see what happens.
Thanks for the vote of confidence.
Tom
heatherlynn 07-10-2008, 11:42 PM We are a musical family. I am also learning to run. Just finished my first 5k. :) WOrking on my next trek.. 8 miles around Mackinac Island woo hoo! Oh and I love to write.
lesliekremer 07-11-2008, 02:08 AM Awesome Heather. One of these days, I'm going to get the mindset to really get serious about exercise again. You would think that chasing around two toddlers is enough, but it isn't. I'm seriously out of shape right now. I need to go to the thread on fitness, and talk about mindset/motivation...all that fun stuff!
And, I love to write too, which is why I love forums. I have to limit myself to about 5-10'/day on a forum because otherwise, I get out of control...LOL. I always have too much to say!
Great point about the fitness thread. I'm guessing that either Hobbies, Health Concerns, Weight Loss or even the Just for Men/Just for Women sections would a good home for that. Whatever spirit moves you at the time is where the fitness discussion will begin. :p If we get tons of interest we can always open a new forum section as well.
I guess if I could type (without mistakes) as fast as some of you folks (not mentioning any names heatherlynn) that in itself would be considered exercise. :) And even though toddler chasing is not an official olympic sport, it probably should be.
Neat to hear about the 5K run. I used to run quite a bit of cross country my knees have paid the price. Running is a great activity!
Tom
buttrfli 07-22-2008, 02:03 PM I recently started running as well. Not quite 5K though! I regularly run 2 miles pushing my 25 pounder in the jogging storller and I just did a little more today - I gotta see if I made it to 3. I use to have a fish tank too - but that took up too much time and had to go before baby came. What kind of fish do you keep Lefty? I had african cichlids. They were so beautiful and their behavior was so fun to watch. One day when the kids are old enough to help out I'd love to get a big tank - 125 or 250 would be sweet!
Other than that Luke keeps me busy - beach, park, story time at the library, keeping the house clean and working at home. I've started reading sci fi novels in the evenings (hubby got me into that...very odd because I've never really enjoyed reading before). Also I take in a netflix movie or watch reruns of the office online. Once in a while I take a break and do some posting ;)
Running & pushing is something I never tried. It's tough enough pushing myself.
I need to clear up something I should have cleared up a while back. Lefty's dad is gonzo. Or more correctly that userid is being merged into TS33 (Tom). When I kicked off this board I thought it would make sense to deal with occasional board issues as one userid (Tom) but do my non-admin normal posting stuff with a different userid (Lefty's dad). Well, all it's done is confused me so about two weeks ago the username Lefty's dad was retired. All the posts under that userid will soon be merged into TS33. I apologize for any confusion. Despite the fact I thought it would make more sense that way, I should not have tried to split things out. I never had any intention of being misleading.
Back to the tank question. Mine is a 55 gallon freshwater, with the primary inhabitants being the plants. I really got hooked on planted tanks. It ends up the fish just come along for the ride. I have a variety of community fish including Pearl Gouramis, catfish, otos, rasboras, rummynose tetras, pencilfish, and the ever-reproducing endlers. It's a real pleasure, but you're right. It does take some time to keep up and running. I owe much of what I learned about how to start up a forum board from the college student who runs the very successful forum board about freshwater planted tanks, http://plantedtank.net/forums. Talk about a big board, it has 17,000+ members, and as of when I'm typing this 235 members online! Lot's more folks out there in the hobby than I would have ever guessed.
One last thought about your comment......

Yeah, once in a while...
buttrfli 07-24-2008, 02:32 PM Well that makes alot more sense, thanks for clearing that up Tom.
I had a few plants at one point. They definitely make a tank much more appealing. I cant remember what I had though...I guess I have too much baby on the brain to remember much before him! I got into forums from the fish hobby as well. Then nursing, now this, which is by far my fav ;)
Another thing I forgot to mention...I bake bread. That just started pretty recently but its such a hit that I bake at least 4 loaves a week. Thankfully we have a breadmaker. I let it do all the hard work then bake in the oven. Andy gets sandwiches packed for lunch and I always bring bread to a dinner or get together. We think it saves a little money but its funny how much more bread we eat now! I might have to get up to three miles a little quicker to offset all those calories!

heatherlynn 07-25-2008, 10:24 AM lol
PS... I love baking bread. I haven't used my bread maker in a while though.
buttrfli 07-25-2008, 10:58 AM I haven't used my bread maker in a while though.
We got ours for our wedding 5 years ago and just started using it. Pretty glad I didnt throw it out. Yeah, I'm one of those get rid of everything you dont use people. I hate clutter. Def. not as obsessive as I was pre-Luke. Everything has to be a little more cluttered when you have kids.
heatherlynn 07-27-2008, 06:19 AM Ugh.. clutter.. can you say SIX KIDS, A HUSBAND AND TWO CATS???? Geesh.. the thing is my dh, bless his heart, is really a little OCD and cannot stand the clutter. It's an uphill battle.
Yikes, how did I get so far behind in this thread?????
buttrfli that's really cool about the "fish forum." Must be a popular way for fish folks to connect. And it's a good darn thing we don't have a bread machine. I'd be spending my days in the Weight Loss forum  Who can resist fresh baked bread.
symphonyodd, regarding the clutter thing. Our house definitely has a clutter threshold that things can't cross. Dw works hard to keep things under control but sometimes it crosses the threshold and then it's an all hands effort. One of the things we TRY to teach is for everybody to take care of their messes, but it's not always a successful lesson. But we try!
cheeriokeeper 08-06-2008, 05:54 PM hmmmm..."spare time?" I don't have any of that! LOL!
I have to schedule "me" time!
I like to read, write in my journal or blog, take photos to scrap, crafts, take walks, brouse the bookstores, and chat with friends!
