View Full Version : Question: Postpartum Exercise
happywife 04-28-2009, 12:35 PM My baby is 3 weeks old. I've already dropped below the weight I started at before the pregnancy just from nursing... but it's shifted to all the wrong places!
I'm feeling pretty well now ~ no more achy uterus, bleeding, etc. and my back and body only ache a bit when I've been too active. So, do you think it's okay to start regular exercise? I have a treadmill, and I might try an aerobics DVD or something (recommendations accepted on that, by the way ~ is there anything with Christian music out there?).
What did y'all do to get back in shape after baby?

I would probably check with your doctor on how long you should wait to begin exercising. After my DS was born, I pushed myself too hard at about 2-3 weeks postpartum and I ended up bleeding really bad. The doctor told me it was because I was trying to do too much too soon. I would be careful and don't overdo it. :)
myhappyhome 04-28-2009, 03:54 PM I agree with Leah. After my 4th, I did too much too soon and ended up bleeding a lot. My Dr. told me I was doing too much and advised me to wait until after my 6 week post partum check.
I think a little walking is probably OK, but I don't think you should start aerobic exercise yet. JMO. And, remember, it took 9 months to get your body how it is, don't expect everything to be back to normal right away.
For me, just eating right and walking have pretty much got me back to normal after all my babies. This last one has been a bit more challenging but it seems like all of a sudden my body is going back to normal.(DS is 10mo. old)I think my age may have slowed things down a bit this time. :D
My advice is to nurse your baby, rest and don't worry too much about exercise yet.

That's an amazing start! My baby is nearly 7 months and I'm still not quite down to my pre-preg weight!
I agree that you need to be careful about pushing yourself too hard so early, but I think you need to take into account how active you were before you gave birth. The more active you were, the more you can do now I would think. But def check with your doctor, as I am not qualified in any professional way!

buttrfli 04-28-2009, 05:12 PM My understanding is always 6 weeks til sex or exercise. Even if you are healing well I would stick to your OB recommendations. After that a good combo of cardio and weight training is ideal for anyone wanting to get in shape. For me, I cant wait to get back to the Y for the tread, elliptical and machines. But if a gym membership is out of the question its a great time to run outside and then do some general stuff after - sit ups, push ups, stretches. Alot of people like pilates, though I couldn't get the hang of it. And yes, nursing will work wonders so keep it up! Anyway, good luck and just remember to stick to doctors orders!
cheeriokeeper 04-29-2009, 11:09 AM i agree with all posters--you should check with your OB/GYN to see when it's ok to start exercising again. the general rule of thumb is 6 weeks postpartum.
and even then you should start out light.
hope you and baby are well!

I agree. I pushed myself too much after having the twins (more of of necessity than anything!) and had to deal with heavy bleeding and a lot longer than ever before.
eliszabeth 04-29-2009, 04:57 PM I agree with the people that said to wait till 6 weeks. That's what I was told. Also be carefull what you do. I was advised to stick to walking and yoga or palates for the first little while because it's not so hard on your body. I was still running till I was about 6 months pregnant and then slowed to a jog then to a walk so it was really hard following orders but totally worth it after talking to people that didn't do what they were told. Talk to your midwife/OB/etc. to find out what they think you should be doing.
steph c 05-01-2009, 06:00 PM All that is great advice. You can put baby in stoller and walk around the block if you want a change of scenery. And this may sound silly but you could also get a pedometer and just keep track of steps. You may find that you are doing more than you think you are already. Dont rush it, in the end it will just make it harder on you.

mielkman 05-02-2009, 01:47 AM Everyone here has great advice, check with your health provider.
As far as regular dieting goes, I don't want to be a pain, but just remember to be healthy with it. Don't lose too much too fast, and I highly recommend those awesome scales that tell you your hydration and body fat. It's a bit of a splurge to put down 40 bucks on a scale, but it's so encouraging to be able to see the difference when your goal is not weight loss, but changing where your weight comes from.
Just be healthy, whatever you do! If your weight, and body fat is healthy, and you don't have trouble doing your cardio exercises (when you're ready for it) the particular shapes of everything don't really matter!
